The State of South Africa's Stocks: The Best Since 1999

The pandemic inflicted a huge knock on our economy as bans on booze crippled the industry and resulted in huge financial losses, with many losing their jobs. However, for the first time since 1999, South Africa’s stocks are in great shape.

South Africa’s main stock index continued to rise for several days in early January and achieved a third consecutive record close. This is much in part due to mining stocks benefiting from the hopes for economic stimulus in America. Our local market giant, Naspers Ltd., gave the rally more stature as it rebounded from large losses as global technology shares rose.

South African shares have climbed by 67% from the pandemic-selloff plummet from last March. The recent incline has pushed the 14-day relative strength index on the gauge to almost 80, which is the highest since 2017.

Investors all over are piling into assets that usually win in an ever-improving economic cycle, with loose monetary policies and hopes of increased stimulus spending under newly elected U.S. President, Joe Biden, accelerating these bets in a so-called ‘reflation trade’.

Additionally, the Rand has continued to strengthen against a rather shaky Dollar, which has given local bank stocks a boost.

North Point Ballito not only wants to provide options to forward-thinking businesses looking to grow in 2021 but also wants to highlight the good news that all-too-often gets overlooked in the industries that we target.
