Moving first: the advantage
of being an entrepreneur

For self-storage entrepreneur Teko Vilakazi, setting up shop at
North Point Ballito was a simple question of position.

For Teko Vilakazi, finding the right space was priority #1 when looking to expand his secure self-storage company on KZN’s North Coast

With close to two decades in the storage game, Teko knew that a move into KZN was inevitable, and began looking for a location midway through 2019. Despite looking at dozens of properties from Umhlanga to Empangeni, nothing he looked at quite fit the bill until his North Point Ballito site visit in January.

Teko’s success in the storage industry is a result of careful planning and a keen eye for the shifting trends in logistics.

“I need to have a strong consumer base around my business. Ballito is at the centre one of the continent’s fastest growing wealth areas. I knew the opportunities were there, I just needed the right location.”

For Teko, brand image has always played an important role in the success of his self-storage facilities.

“People need to trust you and the neighbourhood you’re in before they’ll commit to storing with you”, said Vilakazi from his headquarters in Gauteng, “It’s also essential that I have the strong roadside visibility and the right sort of audience to see me consistently. With my site visible from the entrance and the R102, I’m confident we’ve chosen the right location.”

“My units offer a tactical advantage for companies that need tactical proximity to the airport in a small-scale format. There were many along the N2 that we considered, but none of them had the added benefit of Ballito right on the doorstep.”

Despite 2020’s rocky start, Vilakazi is pragmatic: “It’s never been cheaper to fill up at the pump, interest rates are lower than ever and the Rand is well placed for exporters. Things are still uncertain, but there’s a lot of reason to be bullish.”
