Rise & grind: a new roastery
for coffee connoisseurs

The coffee game has taken Pierre from mountain-top villages
to chic Milanese espresso bars. He’s building a bespoke
roastery to
serve the discerning North Coast customer.

Pierre Conradie’s* love of coffee goes beyond a morning cup of Joe. Once you get the coffee bug in you, it becomes a lifelong hunt for the perfect bean.

“I got into coffee through wine,” Pierre’s face lights up when he talks coffee, his enthusiasm for the topic is infectious.”I started as a sommelier in a silver service restaurant. I had a customer tell me that coffee was more complex than wine, and in trying to prove him wrong I found my calling.”

Taking a job as an apprentice at a world-renowned coffee roastery in Cape Town, Pierre’s refined palette and personal drive soon elevated him to the role of coffee buyer.

“Coffee has taken me places I never thought I’d go,” Pierre relates, “owning my own roastery is just another dream come true.”

Telling his own story

As a taster, Pierre has experienced more than most coffee enthusiasts ever will, and there’s a lot of that story that doesn’t get told on supermarket shelves.

“Most coffee brands are looking for conventional flavours and buying in bulk. There are varieties out there that are too offbeat or distinctive, or they’re not grown in big enough quantities for the competition. That’s where I come in.”

Location plays an important role

Finding the right space for the roastery was a year-long challenge. Pierre first looked in Cape Town and later Johannesburg, but with competition fierce in both cities, none of the spaces quite fit the bill.

“I needed something with both retail and industrial potential. I love interacting with people, so I wanted somewhere close to a growing residential area, where a roastery and coffee outlet were possible.”

Set within Ballito’s town limits, North Point Ballito wasn’t like any option he had looked at. With a range of small sites to choose from, KZN’s North Coast rose to the top of the list.

“North Point Ballito is close to the airport for exports and expeditions. It’s a beautiful estate that matches the image I’m looking to portray.”
